Ladies give up plenty to help boost our appeal

TWO more people have backed our appeal for Springhill Hospice by making generous sacrifices.

We owe a big thank-you to Doris Huntbach, of Kingsway.

Earlier this month, Mrs Huntback celebrated her 80th birthday with family and friends at the Masonic Hall. She let it be known that rather than presents, donations for the hospice would be more than appreciated.

Husband Jack said: "Doris said she had everything she needed and wanted the hospice to benefit. When we read about the Observer appeal, she decided the money should go towards that."

Thanks to Mrs Huntbach, who is the committee chairman of the ATS Association, her birthday gifts of £718 have boosted the Observer appeal.

Hospice volunteer Lauren Jones spared more than a minute for our appeal – she cycled from Manchester to Blackpool and raised hundreds of pounds.

Last week the £600 sponsorship money that she and Stephen Pickles, who did the cycle ride with her, collected was handed over when she visited the hospice before returning to her studies at Nottingham University

A volunteer for two years, Lauren continues to offer her help to the hospice whenever she’s home in Rochdale.

The 19-year-old, who received a warm welcome from chief executive Chris Webb, said: "You build up relationships and I’ve made a lot of friends here at the hospice."
