Fight against car plate thefts

MOTORISTS are being urged to attend a series of car crime clinics to combat registration plate theft.

Special anti-theft screws will be fitted to number plates free of charge by police community support officers at two Safe Plate days in the area.

The screws are covered with an extra security cap making them difficult to remove.

The Observer reported in June how soaring fuel prices were being blamed for an increase in the number of drive-offs at petrol stations.

Thieves were stealing number plates from unsuspecting motorists and fitting them to their own cars to avoid paying for petrol.

Victims are usually unaware their number plate has been used in a criminal incident until they receive a summons through the post.

The clinics will take place at B&Q on Wednesday 3 September from 3pm to 7.30pm and Matalan on Monday 8 September from 10am to 3pm.

Inspector Michelle Hughes, of the Rochdale South neighbourhood policing team, said: “I would urge people to attend the clinics, because having these screws fitted is a simple measure that will reduce the risk of cars being targeted. It costs nothing, doesn’t damage the car and could save people money in the long term.”
