Water warning after drowning

Alice McKeegan

YOUNGSTERS are being urged to stay away from water during the summer holidays.

The warning was issued by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service following the tragic death of Joseph Thomas, aged 13, at Watergrove Reservoir on Sunday.

Barry Dixon, county fire officer, appealed to young people to be aware of the dangers of unsupervised swimming.

He said: “It is an almost inevitable fact that a spate of hot weather usually means we will find ourselves attending a tragic incident involving someone playing on or near water.

“I know it’s tempting for people but it is all too easy for them to get into trouble. If you fancy a dip then go to your local swimming pool, it’s supervised and safe.”

He added that the water is often colder than children imagine and the harsh conditions can affect their physical capabilities.

Mr Dixon also urged parents to supervise their children’s activities during the summer.
