Waste site plan is approved

COUNCILLORS have given the go-ahead for a new waste treatment plant in Rochdale, capable of handling up to 102,000 tonnes of rubbish every year.

The development by Viridor Waste Management Ltd is similar to an application given planning permission in August last year, but the fresh application is slightly smaller with two buildings on site rather than three.

The site comprises 2.2 hectares of land off Chichester Street, not far from the Pringle Street caravan park.

The facility will create 19 jobs and according to planners will be important in allowing Rochdale to achieve waste and recycling targets set by the government and the EC.

Further, it would not have any harmful effects on the environment.

Rochdale Township Planning Sub-committee heard this week the new waste trasner reource centre was the first of several integrated waste treatment developments proposed for Greater Manchester as part of a network of facilities to increase recycling and and composting, diverting waste from landfill, and to recover energy.
