Boy (13) dies in reservoir tragedy

30/ 7/2008

A TEENAGE boy has drowned in a reservoir in Wardle.

13-year-old Joseph Thomas, of Wardle, was reported missing from his home just after 4pm on Sunday.

Police officers were called and their inquiries led to Watergrove Reservoir being searched.  A body was recovered by police divers at 12.25am on Monday.

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.

It is thought that Joseph had been swimming with friends at the reservoir during Saturday night or early on Sunday morning.

He was reported missing by his parents when he failed to return home to Green Meadow later in the day.

Online tributes were being left by fellow Rochdale AFC supporters and club officials also paid their respects.

Colin Garlick, the chief executive of Rochdale AFC, said: "We are very sad to hear the news. It’s an absolute tragedy, especially for someone so young.

"We would offer our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends at this time."

Scott Goulding, a board member of Rochdale Supporters’ Trust, added: "It’s a sad loss of someone at such a young age. It’s awful news and our thoughts go out to his family and friends."

A police spokeswoman said: "The body of a boy was recovered and inquiries into how he came to be in the water are ongoing."

She added that the death was not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.
