Lake neighbours lose parking space battle

PLANS to introduce residents’ parking permits at Hollingworth Lake have been scrapped.

In March, Rochdale Council promised to look at possible solutions to stop visitors clogging up nearby streets on bank holidays and weekends.

Now, the Pennines Township office has confirmed that the proposals have been shelved after deciding that the money would be better spent on ‘other priorities’.

Councillor Peter Evans expressed disappointment that the scheme had been axed.

He said: "A couple of years ago the bus route was axed because time and time again it couldn’t get through.

"It was thought that residents’ parking permits would be in place by the time the Easter fair came round again, but now that is not going to happen.

"I am angry and frustrated because I was told it was going ahead and I passed that on to residents. It is absolute bedlam and it is making the lives of people who live there a misery."

Barry Cropper, vice-chairman of the Friends of Hollingworth Lake, led the calls for the scheme to be introduced.

He said: "Hollingworth Lake is called Rochdale’s ‘jewel in the crown’ and the council wants more people to visit yet it won’t spend any money on this.

"It doesn’t make sense because there is a serious problem with congestion and residents have been calling for this for almost a year."

   No money?

Are they having a laugh?

A residents parking scheme such as this usually makes more than enough to pay for itself.

I think some senior officials must regularly frequent the lake and don't want to lose their parking spots.
