Carnival drama as queens collapse in sun-baked parade

THE sun shone on Castleton carnival with some dramatic consequences.

Despite the heat, the 32nd annual parade hosted a fancy dress line-up with party goers from across the North West and Derbyshire braving the midday sunshine in elaborate costumes.

But carnival queen Emilie Broome’s day in the limelight was cut short after she collapsed in the heat and had to be rushed to hospital.

Junior carnival queen Hayley Rowe stepped into her shoes to ensure the show continued.

But her moment in the spotlight was also short-lived, after she was also struck down by the heat and had to be given treatment.

Carnival queen co-ordinator Rachel Anderton said: "The fancy dress was outstanding and the weather was nice and sunny, better than last year.

"It was so hot. There was some drama with the carnival queens, but everything is OK now.

"I’m very grateful to the people who came on the floats, but I’d like to see more floats next year and more people from Castleton involved."

The parade was followed by activities at Springfield Park including games and stalls, a fair and miniature train. Queensway’s Ryalux carpets and Thornham St John’s Church scooped prizes for the best vehicles.

The John Anderton best overall award, in memory of the Castleton Carnival organiser, was given to Rochdale Connexions for their help with the floats and charity fund-raising.

The amount of money raised is still being calculated, with all of the proceeds donated to the Moorland Children’s Home.
