Give us five - and boost hospice fund

CAN you spare a minute? We hope so – and that you’ll support the Observer’s Bring A Fiver to Work Day on 8 August, when all the money collected will go to our appeal for Springhill Hospice.

It was in May 1983 that a £5 donation from a ward sister at Birch Hill Hospital launched the appeal to build a hospice in Rochdale.

Today, £5 equates to a minute’s care at Springhill, which is why the appeal slogan is: Can You Spare A Minute?

On 8 August – an easy date to remember, 08.08.08 – we’re asking local businesses and employers to support ‘Bring a Fiver to Work Day’, when everyone who can donates £5 to our appeal for Springhill Hospice.

Over a 12-month period, the aim is to raise enough money to refurbish at least one of three in-patient bays, which each accommodates three patients, at a cost of £25,000 each.

All the money given to the appeal is recorded in the Observer and on the Observer website. Details of the fund-raising and the people supporting the appeal – and their reasons for doing so – appear in the newspaper each week.

If you can sign up for the Bring A Fiver to Work day on 8 August, we would like to hear from you. We can arrange to collect the money and take a photograph for our appeal pages.

We can even arrange for the hospice to supply you with a collection bucket for donations.

Bring A Fiver to Work Day is a simple way to support the fund-raising for Springhill Hospice and requires the minimum effort – all people need to do is turn up for work with their fiver!

And don’t forget, the person, business, group or organisation which raises the most over our special year of fund-raising will be honoured with an acorn award at the hospice.

When you think about it, £5 doesn’t buy very much these days. Together we can make sure it does – and that every minute counts.
