£10,000 reward is bait to trap armed PO thugs

25/ 7/2008

THE Post Office is offering a £10,000 reward in a bid to trap armed thugs who carried out a terrifying robbery.

Three men wearing high-visibility jackets entered the Lowerplace branch in Oldham Road at about 1.20pm last Friday afternoon.

With frightened customers watching, one of the men told staff he had a gun and demanded they hand over cash.

The trio then fled in a getaway car which was parked nearby.

The £10,000 reward is being offered by the Post Office for any information which leads to a conviction.

Detective Constable Ben Harris, of Rochdale CID, said: "This was a very serious incident involving the threat of a firearm and has left staff extremely shaken.

"There must have been customers waiting in the post office at the time of the robbery when the internal alarm sounded and we really need to speak to them as they may have crucial information for us.

"We would therefore urge anyone who might have seen something suspicious to get in touch."

The man who demanded the cash was white, 5ft 6in tall, slim, in his late 20s, with a long face and dark eyes.

He was wearing blue jeans, a peaked cap and a fluorescent yellow padded jacket. He spoke with a Scottish accent.

A Post Office Ltd spokesman said: "There was an incident at Lowerplace Post Office where an amount of money was handed over to an assailant who made threats using a handgun. Fortunately, no-one was injured.

"Police are investigating the incident and Post Office Ltd is offering a reward of up to £10,000 for information which leads to arrest and conviction."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4646.

how does henry kelley now how much money was taken. when there is no mention of the amount anywere in the news. plus if people sre given side arms to protect them selfs that would only ad to more killings. the police are trying to stop gun culture not to promote it. the only way to stop this. is to bring back capital punishment. we don't want to end up like the usa.

If they had not handed over the 5 grand, they would have been shot dead. Yet another reason why decent citizens should be allowed to carried licensed side arms to protect themselves and their peoperty.
