New crackdown in bid to attack crime

A NEW campaign will help to make the streets of Rochdale safer this summer.

The Safe4Summer campaign, a partnership with the police, Rochdale community safety team, trading standards, ward councillors and the fire service, will tackle youth nuisance in the Greave, Cutgate, Brotherod, Spotland, Norden and Caldershaw areas over the school holidays.

These areas were chosen for the five-week crackdown because they were identified as having problems with alcohol-influenced youth nuisance.

As part of the initiative community support officers will carry out stop-checks on children seen drinking on the streets and congregating in large groups.

Letters will then be sent home to parents to inform them about their child’s behaviour.

If the child commits a repeat offence they will be interviewed by police and they could be issued with an Acceptable Behaviour Order, a voluntary written agreement between the offender, the police and the council to stop bad behaviour over a certain period.

Trading standards licensing officers will visit off-licences to reinforce the message that they should be responsible retailers.

And activities, such as five-a-side football and rugby, will be organised across the targeted areas.

Kylie Thornton, principal anti-social behaviour officer for Rochdale Council, said: "This initiative is about keeping young people safe and highlighting the consequences of hanging around on the streets.

"And it will deliver the message to parents ‘do you know what time your kids will be home and what they are doing?’"

The initiative, which will run until 5 September, will have its official launch with a family fun day at Rochdale Football Club on Monday 28 July (10am-2pm).

Activities will include face painting, a visit by the fire service and a five-a-side football match with police officers.
