Masked raid stopped by smoke

A MASKED armed man threatened staff at a Shaw bank before leaving empty-handed when a smoke alarm was set off.
Shortly after 9.30am on Wednesday, 25 June police were called to Barclays Bank, in Market Street, following reports of an attempted armed robbery.
The offender walked into the bank before putting on a balaclava and taking out a handgun, which he used to threaten bank staff. He then shouted: "Money."
The woman behind the counter immediately pressed the alarm, which activated a smoke device. As the bank filled with smoke, the offender ran out of the door empty-handed. It is believed he ran down an alleyway beside a shop in Market Street.
He is described as white and 5ft 9ins tall. He was wearing a black balaclava, with a blue waterproof jacket, blue jeans, black shoes and was carrying a royal blue rucksack. Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and have released CCTV stills of the incident.
Detective Sergeant Lindsey Curry of Oldham CID said: "If it wasn’t for the quick thinking actions of staff this incident could have been much worse. This man seems to think nothing of brandishing a gun and he needs to be caught and held accountable for his actions.
"If anyone saw the offender as he ran out of the bank and down Market Street, or recognise him from the description given, please get in touch."
