£1M cannabis farm operators are jailed

24/ 6/2008

TWO men have been jailed after being convicted of operating a cannabis farm with an estimated street value of £1M.

At Bolton Crown Court on Monday Mahmood Anwar, 50, of Pullman Street, Rochdale, was jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to producing cannabis and Mujahid Ishaq, 36, of Cumbrae Road, Levenshulme, was sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to being concerned in the production of cannabis and possession with intent to supply.

Officers had raided an industrial unit in Bishop Street, Rochdale at 10.30am on Thursday 31 January when they discovered hundreds of cannabis plants at various stages of growth.

At the time police described it as one of the biggest drugs farms ever found in Rochdale.

Large bags of cannabis in plastic bags that had been grown and dried out were found inside the building as well as plants hanging from the walls to dry out.

Police also found a large amount of cannabis cultivating equipment including lighting, tanks full of water, a drainage system and a large quantity of wiring and plug sockets.

As the officers forced their way into another ground floor room they saw an old damaged toilet. As they got further into the room they suddenly saw a pair of legs disappear from behind the toilet into what looked like a neighbouring room.

Officers went into the neighbouring unit and found Anwar and Ishaq, who were both covered in dirt. They were then arrested and interviewed.

Detective Inspector Daryl Chadwick, from Rochdale Police, said: "This operation has resulted in a vast amount of drugs being stopped from hitting the streets.

"Drugs contribute to all manner of criminal offences and removing the people responsible for supplying them is essential."

Yet again pathetic sentences no wonder the streets are full of drug dealers making money hand over fist while honest decent people work. Build more prisons & minimum sentences of 10 years for the scum that get away with making the UK a playground for criminals NO wonder i emigrated! Mrs Tomlinson Australia
