Travellers told to leave

10/ 6/2008

TRAVELLERS decamped to a car park – just hours after they were evicted from a football pitch.

More than 30 caravans were served with notice to leave Burton Park, the home of St Clement’s football team, at the rear of Bury Road, Oakenrod.

When the deadline passed, police officers turned up on Friday morning to advise them to leave.

When some of the travellers failed to comply, the vehicle recovery team moved in to seize six of the travellers’ caravans, which are now being held at a storage site in Bury.  Minutes later the travellers arrived on Halford’s car park, Richard Street, and officers were again forced to step in to tackle the problem.

As the Observer went to press, the travellers had moved from Halford’s to Mandale Park, off Manchester Road, and police community support officers were assessing the situation.

Referring to the seized caravans, Inspector James Troisi said: "The travellers now have to prove ownership and pay for the storage of their vehicles before they will be returned to them. Intelligence suggests that it’s the same group of travellers and hopefully we’ve sent out a clear message that we will step in if needed."

Rochdale MP Paul Rowen, local councillors and representatives from Rochdale Council, also stepped in to help arrange a clean up of Burton Park.

Councillor Wera Hobhouse, Cabinet member for the environment, said tax-payers would have to pick up the cost of the clean-up.

She said: "The travellers made a complete mess of the place. Around 50 tons of rubble was left behind. We have to pay the disposal charge and take the rubble and dispose of it. We can’t charge them at all. They don’t pay council tax."

Now when I was growing up and living in Rochdale it seemed like we did not have the Problem with the (Gypsy's) Travelers. Didn't they have certain lands were they could park. Such as Lenny Barn. Kronkyshaw Commons. big place in Heywood. There must be some vacant land someplace where they could be charged a small amount to park for a short time. Also the town could issure parking permits for a certain amount per month. a rebate could be given back once the have cleaned the place up prior to leaving. It could be ran as a city business now not a free service like years ago.
