Machete-wielding robbers strike at petrol station

Alice McKeegan
12/ 5/2008

ARMED raiders stole a substantial amount of cash during a robbery at a petrol station.

Three masked men, wielding a machete and sledgehammer, walked into the BP garage in Edenfield Road, Norden, and then confronted two G4 security guards outside the store.

They escaped with a large amount of money following the shocking robbery which took place in broad daylight just before 11am on Monday.

They are thought to have fled the scene in a black Mercedes A-Class car and a similar vehicle was found just minutes later on fire in nearby Dixon Fold.

The blaze then spread to an adjacent garage, destroying two classic wedding cars, worth an estimated £15,000.

All three suspects were wearing balaclavas and dark coloured clothing. They spoke with Manchester accents.

The man carrying a machete was 6ft 3ins.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4591 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

When are we going to wake up? What is the point of having licensed security guards who do not have the tools for their work? They should be trained and issued with side arms. By killing this trash as they terrorize the population, they would have done society a good turn too. Yes our police should be armed too, what a copper with his or her little metal stick can do against a thug armed with a sledgehammer is difficult to see.
