Emma set to bid farewell to Corrie

29/ 4/2008

LITTLEBOROUGH-based actress Emma Edmondson is one of seven Coronation Street stars to be axed from the soap series.

Mel – as she’s known to viewers – will trip down the famous cobbles for the last time in the autumn, along with the rest of her on-screen family.

The show’s new producer, Kim Crowther, said: "Coronation Street has always had a tradition of characters who come into the show to play out stories alongside more established characters before moving on. As in any community, there are people who live there for many years and people who pass through."

Littleborough born and bred, 24-year-old Emma attended Holy Cross Primary School and Wardle High School before gaining a performing arts diploma at the Sheena Simon College in Manchester. She still lives in the district. And she has many fans – among them staff and volunteers at the RSPCA centre in Redcross Street.

Emma joined them to help run a jumble sale in March. She was also a guest at the charity’s annual meeting earlier this month, where she presented several awards to volunteers. RSPCA animal shelter manager Jean Spencer said: "Emma is a lovely, friendly girl and has done a lot to support us. She adopted a kitten last year and is now talking about adopting another."

Producer Crowther added: "We still have some interesting lines to play with these characters before they leave Weatherfield. They are all very talented actors and we wish them well for the future."

Only in March Emma told the Observer how much she was enjoying being in the Street and was hoping for some gritty storylines in the future.

She described joining the soap as her ‘big breakthrough’.

But she can take heart from those who left the show and went on to win critical acclaim, including Rochdale’s Meg Johnson and Sue Devaney, who have both appeared in theatre and other long-running TV series.

Soon there will be many other people from Rochdale who will be making a name for themselves. All we had for years was "Gracie Fields" She did leave memories. Good luck to all the Rochdale girls who are working so hard. I hope I can catch you on T.V the times I come over to Rochdale.
