Pub rapist's jail sentence is cut
25/ 4/2008
A PUB manager who raped a 19-year-old student after plying her with alcohol has won a cut in the minimum time he must spend behind bars.
Richard Salt, of Edenfield Road, was found guilty of raping the teenager at the Lancashire Lass following a trial at Bolton Crown Court and was also convicted of assault and incitement to pervert the course of justice.
He was given an indefinite term of imprisonment for public protection (IPP) after being branded a danger of causing further serious harm, and ordered to serve at least seven years behind bars.
An IPP is almost identical to a life sentence, in that those serving them are only freed once they have convinced the parole board they are no longer a risk to the public.
Top judges at London’s Court of Appeal concluded that a seven-year minimum term was too long, cutting it to five-and-a-half years.
But Mr Justice Blair, sitting with Lord Justice Hughes and Mr Justice David Clarke, rejected arguments that Salt, 36, should not have been given the indefinite sentence.
The court heard that Salt attacked his victim on 10 June 2006, after she agreed to stay at the pub for an after-hours drink.
She had unwittingly taken cocaine and Salt encouraged her to drink until she was unconscious.
He then tidied the pub before indecently assaulting her and then took her to the pub toilets where he raped her.
Mr Justice Blair said Salt had ‘deliberately engineered’ a row with his girlfriend so he could be alone with his victim and his attack on the ‘naive’ girl was ‘pre-meditated.’
The judge added that Salt had asked a friend to lie on his behalf when the victim went to the police and that related to the perverting the course of justice charge.
The court heard he had numerous previous convictions, including some for violence, and had sought to minimise his wrongdoing.
