PATRIOTIC Rochdalians will celebrate St George’s Day today with a host of events across the town.

Although no official parades have been organised, the Union Jack is flying high outside the Town Hall and the feast day of England’s patron saint will be marked in style by a number of businesses.

Nutters in Norden is also celebrating the festival and the restaurant has been decorated with red and white bunting.

The mayor, Councillor Peter Evans, will attend an annual service at St Mary’s The Baum, St Mary’s Gate, on Sunday.

Pupils from Spotland Primary School will ditch their usual uniforms and wear Union Jack colours during lessons for the day.

Kings Private Hire, a taxi firm based in Milkstone Road, is doing its bit to celebrate by encouraging drivers to fly flags during the run up to the festival.

A spokesman said: "Many of our drivers, Asian and white alike will be proudly flying flags for St George’s Day. I’m sure our customers will appreciate this and it’s very important for good community relations. We always celebrate Eid and other festivals as well because Rochdale is a multi-cultural town."

Members of the luncheon club at Spotland and Falinge Community Centre will also enjoy a St George’s themed afternoon.

Shakeela Bano, a diversity officer from the Rochdale Centre of Diversity, welcomed the celebrations and feels that it’s important to embrace different cultural festivals.

She said: "I think it’s fantastic that we celebrate diversity through events at the centre because we have a very diverse community in Rochdale. It’s very important to celebrate different festivals and everyone can celebrate St George’s Day. "When we celebrate any festival, it shouldn’t just be for one group of people and we want to encourage community cohesion."

i did not see if a Union Jack was flying above the town hall and why should it be on St George's Day? Though if the picture in the Observer is of the flag mentioned in the artical, then the reporter is seriously confused!! The flag of St George it most definitely is!!!!

Whay is the Ubion flag raised outside the town hall? This is St. Georges day. He is the patron saint of England! (So why raise a 4 nation flag?) I think in Tbilisi (capital of Georgia, who share the same patron saint) they will be proudly raising their national flag of St. George and not that of the Soviet Union!
