Man gunned down in street

22/ 4/2008

A MAN was gunned down in the street as he walked through the Clover Hall estate on Monday afternoon.

Police were called out to the Farm Walk, Beal Crescent area at about 4.25pm following reports of gunshots.

Shortly afterwards a 24-year-old man was traced by police to hospital with wounds to his legs and lower back.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Local residents reported hearing one or two gunshots. The suspects are described as three shaven-headed white men driving a blue Subaru.

One of the men is thought to have been wearing a long, dark coat.

Police say it is unclear what the motive for the attack was.

A major incident room has been set up at Rochdale police station and officers are now searching the area and studying CCTV footage.

Detective Inspector Daryl Chadwick said: “It is a shocking incident to happen on the streets of Rochdale.

“We will not tolerate the criminal use of firearms and I appeal to anyone who has any information about the blue Subaru or the three males to contact police.”

Contact Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4644 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
