Hornets go on the record

Mike Floyd
18/ 4/2008

ROCHDALE Hornets have been making and breaking records for many years, but few records can compare with the one that has arrived in the Observer office this week.

Hornets' fan Graham Oddy visited us with a dusty old 45 containing a song entitled 'Hornets, Hornets'.

When it was made is anybody's guess, though Graham thinks that he may have first received it in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

With the help of Rick from Rocks Off in Drake Street, who helped us to lift the song from vinyl and into electronic format, we are able to bring you the dulcet tones of the rochdale hornets squad.

Click on the audio link to hear the song - and let us know if you can shed any light on this part of Rochdale musical history.

I have been a Rochdale Hornets fan for many years (1947-1992)I emigrated to Thailand in 1992. I clearly remember my good friend, Peter Robinson, bringing the record "Hornets, Hornets" to the Athletic Grounds, but unfortunately can not remember the year. This was the same Peter Robinson who went to live in New Zealand for several years. When he returned he set up the Indoor Cricket Centre in a building once owned by Turner Bros. Asbestos. Unfortunately, Peter contracted a deadly form of cancer from the club building and died sometime in the 1990's.
