No traffic all of a Sudden ...

15/ 4/2008

WHAT A difference a day makes. On Saturday, there was still traffic chaos, as there had been for months, while a major junction reconfiguration took place at Sudden.

Then came the magic moment on Sunday when the traffic lights – which have replaced the roundabout – were switched on. And it soon became clear the multi-million pound work had done the trick.

As Rochdale Observer photographer Sean Hansford discovered during evening rush hour on Monday, traffic was flowing smoothly.

Work on the Silk Street roundabout is due to be finished in May.

Doug Collins, the council’s design and construction manager, said: "The new junction layout has been working well and the council is pleased that this important scheme has been completed."

I have lived in Castleton for many years and never had a problem with any of the roundabouts at Sudden. The junctions are a different story. With the roundabouts there was always a steady flow of traffic. Now, with the new lights, it's nothing but hold ups. Are Rochdale council trying to get a world record in how many sets of traffic lights they can put in a short space? It's all been nothing but a waste of time and money in my opinion. We have been held up for over a year, and now that the lights are in place it looks like we will be held up for the foreseeable future. Not what I'd call an "improvement!"

works great, but two comments, traffic lights outside moon furniture, and where are the signs for which lane to get in as you come off the 627.
