Health bosses defend surplus

28/ 3/2008

HEALTH bosses have defended their policies after it was revealed that Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Primary Care Trust has a £2.9M funding surplus.

The money will be banked at the end of the month and bosses say the savings show they are managing their budgets well.

They insist that the cash – accrued over the last 12 months – is only a tiny proportion of their annual income and just 0.9 per cent of the total Government funding received.

Joanne Newton, the PCT’s director of finance and economic reform, also claims that the savings will help to improve services across the borough during the forthcoming year.

She said: "This funding has been earmarked to support a programme of significant investment in healthcare facilities and improve access to local services.

"New healthcare centres in Alkrington and Deeplish are due to open in 2008 and centres in Heywood and Hamer and Wardleworth in 2009 will bring services closer to home.

"In addition to this, the PCT is proposing to further extend access to primary care services with the development of three new GP practices and a health centre."

Other areas in the region which have set money aside are: Bolton £5.5M, Bury £1M, Manchester £3M, Stockport £750,000, Tameside £6M, Ashton, Leigh and Wigan £26M and Salford £18.7M.

Stop closing our services if you have surplus money, suppose the government will pocket that surplus amount now?

Where are the facilities for Shawclough?

Or is it that we should just pay up and shut up?

Also, whilst this isn't PCT money, who has trousered the cash from the sale of Birch Hill?
