Arrests made in theft swoop

21/ 3/2008

SIX arrests were made during a police crackdown on lead and metal thefts.

More than 50 people were also searched during the two-week-long Operation Ring.

There has been a spate of lead thefts in Rochdale over the last 10 months, with churches, businesses and homes being targeted.

Inspector Lin Houldershaw said: "Through this operation we have gathered vital intelligence about the theft of lead.

"One thing we are aware of is that offenders are using wheelie bins, not only to reach onto roofs to steal the lead, but also to transport it.

"I would like residents to watch out for this kind of suspicious behaviour and if they spot people on roofs for no apparent reason they should report it immediately to the police."

Arrests were made for burglary, breach of a court order in relation to lead thefts, excess alcohol and breach of the peace offences.

Three cannabis warnings were also issued.

Anyone with any information about lead thefts is asked to contact police on 0161 872 5050.
