Cop faces sack after kicking man’s legs away

19/ 3/2008

A POLICE officer faces the sack after kicking a Castleton man to the floor.

Anthony Lang, aged 36, was convicted of common assault after a court saw CCTV footage of him kicking the legs from under Damian Nuttall at Rochdale Police Station.

The officer, of Moston, now faces an internal

investigation by Greater Manchester Police’s professional standards board.

Mr Nuttall, aged 40, a car dealer, had been arrested for a public order offence last June.He was later released without charge.

Lang pleaded not guilty to a charge of common assault, but was found guilty at Macclesfield Magistrates Court.

He was fined £800 and ordered to pay £350 costs with £100 compensation.

A police spokesman said Lang would be subject of an investigation and added that disciplinary procedures ‘will follow’.

Speaking outside his home Mr Nuttall described Lang as a ‘bully’ and said he hoped he would lose his job.

He added: "It was a totally unprovoked attack. You can’t go around doing that sort of thing."

Mr Nuttall was drinking at the Commercial pub in Castleton on the night of the incident. He said: "Someone came in saying that my son had been ‘jumped’ outside.

"When I went out he had been restrained by police officers and when I went to help I was arrested. I couldn’t understand it, I had had about six pints, but wasn’t drunk."

He added: "I was taken to the checking-in desk and told I had been arrested for a public order offence.

"I said that was nonsense and that’s when he kicked me. I went down face first.

"At first I was dazed, but when I looked up the policewoman behind the desk had her hand over her mouth. She couldn’t believe what she had seen."

Mr Nuttall, who says he was left with several facial injuries from the assault, plans to sue for compensation.Lang said he would not comment while an investigation was underway.

His mother Sheila said the family were ‘worried sick’ he would lose his job.

She added: "He was acting in self defence. He has just found out he is going to be a father and we are all very upset."

Greater Manchester Police refused to release CCTV footage of the incident.

I have been on the recieving end of the Police in Rochdale...and I haven't been arrested for any crime in all my Years on this Earth.

What did they do to investigate the incident?....they had an internal investigation which came to nothing although they have admitted liability that an injury was caused during my stay at their convenience and I could apply for compensation which they would admit the liability.

I don't want money, I wanted justice.

Some Police officers are thugs and if the organisation that supports them doesn't clean house I am afraid they are to be tarred with the same brush.

I've seen this officer remain unbelievably calm in very threatening circumstances. It is a sad state of affairs when police cannot even use minimal or no force without a known thug looking to seek compensation by being dishonest, and tarnishing the name of a well respected and good police officer as a result.

How far will it have to go before Police officers can be true police officers.

Most young criminals will commit crime now just to see their mates in prison because of the luxuries that even some law abiding citizens do not have.

In a society where you can claim compensation for tripping over your own foot, or get a police officer the sack for acting like a complete thug, then lying about your own and the officer's behaviour... it's no wonder the respect for the police is low even from normal civvies and the moral at GMP is virually rock bottom.

What next? Batons and cuffs replaced with feather dusters and a bus pass for criminals to make their own voluntary way to the station??

Its time we went back to basics, zero tolerance and respectable policing.

remember when you'd get a clip round the ear off your dad if a copper gave you a clip round the ear for being a little bugger?

Bring that back before the police service becomes a complete joke.
