Straw praises youth work on town visit
Katie Storey29/ 2/2008
JUSTICE Minister Jack Straw praised the youth work being carried out in Rochdale during a visit on Friday.
Mr Straw met with youths who had turned their lives around through the Kirkholt Youth Inclusion Project and who are now setting examples for other teenagers in the area.
The project was set up in October 2006 and works with youths identified as being at risk of becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.
Mr Straw said he felt that he identified with the youths after growing up on a council estate and was visiting the centre to see the progress made in the last year.
Mr Straw said: “It's about giving individuals hope and raising aspirations, but it's also about what the community can do to help.
“I’ve been impressed with what I've heard.“
He added that projects like the one in Kirkholt could only continue if people with 'energy and commitment' continued to be involved.
