THE plight of of two elderly sisters conned out of their life savings has struck a chord with many Rochdalians.

Mary Alice Horsman, aged 100, and her sister Annie Horsman have received flowers from well-wishers across the town.

The sisters were victims of crime last Thursday when three Asians - one a woman - arrived at their home, asking to test their water supply.

The gang then stole £1,000 before making their escape.

Brave Mary tried to chase after them but fell over, hurting her head.

The raid, described as ‘heinous and despicable’ by the police, has left a number of people fuming.

Among them is John Swinden, owner of J and D Alexander Jewellers on the Walk, who sent the ladies a bunch of flowers.

He said: "Like everyone else, I was saddened that young people could do something like this.

"That someone could rob two elderly ladies like this is devastating."

Margaret Wild said her aunts were very grateful for such support from the public.

"They have received at least five bunches of flowers," she said.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been so supportive."

One man was 5ft 8in and in his 30s. He wore navy blue clothing.

His male accomplice, aged about 30, spoke with an Asian accent, while the woman had a large build.

PC Mark Challender said: "Words cannot describe how heinous and despicable this crime was.

"To steal cash from such elderly and vulnerable women is an unforgivable, disgusting offence.

"Both her and her sister were badly shaken by their ordeal."

He went on to warn residents to store their savings in a bank and refuse to let anyone into their homes without checking ID first.

Anyone who witnessed the gang approach the home at about 12.50pm on Thursday is asked to call the police on 0161 856 4646 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
