Vandalism forces bus move

27/12/2007

BUSES have been diverted away from Sheriff Street after a spate of vandal attacks.

On Saturday 22 December, Sunday 23 December and Monday 24 December bus windows were smashed on four Rossendale Transport services as they travelled along Sheriff Street, but luckily nobody was hurt.

Now transport bosses, concerned about the safety of passengers and staff alike, have decided to divert buses away from the area with immediate effect.

In the first attack, at about 5.40pm on 22 December, an airgun was fired twice at the 444 Rochdale to Norden service. At about 2pm the following day stones were thrown at the the same service and, at about 6.30pm that evening, a window was smashed on the Rochdale to Wallbank 466 service.

On Christmas Eve yobs smashed a window on the 446 service.

Bus operations manager for Rossendale Transport, Robert Edwards, said: “Somebody could have been seriously injured. I don‘t want to cause disruption to passengers, but I think diverting the services is in the interests of all those concerned.”

From now on the 440 Rochdale to Syke service will leave the bus station as usual and travel across the Townhead roundabout, up Whitworth Road and left onto Howard Street, from where it will resume its usual route.

The 446 service to Wallbank via Shawclough, which becomes the 466 service after 4pm, will also go up Whitworth Road and then left onto Bentley Street. From there the service will be as usual.

Mr Edwards added: “We apologise for having to do this and haven‘t done it lightly, but we have to put health and safety first.”

Councillor Allen Brett, Rochdale spokesman for the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, said: “It’s sad when any bus service has to be re-reouted but I think in the interests of safety, not just that of the drivers but the passengers, it’s the only thing we can do.

“Obviously we are working with the police and hope that normal service can be resumed sometime in the new year.”

I understand the need for driver and passenger safety, I do not understand the twisted logic of diverting the Bus. Surely a periodic police pressence would have been more appropriate.

Once again lowlife scum are able to dictate the score. Where are the politicans with a sutiable punishment scheme (Stone a bus, 5 years inside, no ifs, no buts) Or the police who should be patrolling these routes armed with gas, batons and plastic bullets and the authority to use them? Nowhere - it's easier to admit defeat. Lowlife one, Decent People -nil
