A PREGNANT woman had to undergo life-saving surgery after twice being sent home from Rochdale Infirmary by doctors.

Leanne Lincoln was convinced her pregnancy had developed complications but it was only when she collapsed as she tried to walk out of the hospital for the second time that doctors realised their mistake.

She was rushed into surgery where staff, who had failed to diagnose she was undergoing an ectopic pregnancy, battled to stem massive internal bleeding.

Although surgeons managed to save her life, Mrs Lincoln, who lost her unborn baby in surgery, had to have a fallopian tube removed, greatly reducing her chances of becoming pregnant again.

Now the Pennine Acute Trust, the body which runs the Infirmary, has launched a probe into her treatment.

The 23-year-old married mum-of-one said: “After surgery the consultant told me if I had left the hospital I would have been dead within an hour.

“All this could have been so easily prevented.”

Mrs Lincoln’s nightmare began when she started experiencing crippling pains in her abdomen.

Suspecting she might be pregnant Mrs Lincoln, who lives at Newhey Road, Milnrow, with her husband Gareth and three-year-old son Brogan, called the NHS Direct helpline, which advised her to take a pregnancy test and call back.

When the results proved positive a helpline doctor advised her to go to accident and emergency immediately as he feared she might be having a ectopic pregnancy, a condition where the baby grows outside the womb.

She was rushed to the Infirmary by her husband where a blood test confirmed the test results.

Mrs Lincoln says doctors insisted she wasn’t having a ectopic pregnancy and claims they refused to give her a scan which could have confirmed it, instead prescribing her with antibiotics for a water infection and sending her home.

Four hours later the pain became unbearable and Mrs Lincoln returned to the hospital only for doctors to send her home for a second time.

It was only when she collapsed as she tried to walk out of A&E that a gynaecologist was called to examine her and the extent of her problems was discovered.

Mrs Lincoln said: “I was lucky, but somebody else might not be.

“I want something put in place so no one else ever has to go through what I went through.”

A spokesman for the Pennine Acute Trust said a complaint had been received and was being investigated.

As the mother of Leanne, mum in law to Gaz & grandma to Brogan, I would like to thank the people who have left messages of support for them through this awful ordeal - TO ANGLOSAXON - you are a disgusting example of so-called humanity. How on earth you could possibly suggest that this is a whinge I don't know and hopefully, will never understand. Imbociles like you will never realise the need to inform. Hopefully, my daughters' experience will help someone in the future who may just be able to prevent the same thing from happening to them because they heard or read of Leannes' story. God forbid if the worst had happened and we'd lost Leanne, what would you have us say to her 3 year old son - don't whinge lad, at least you had a Mum for three years???? Proud I don't have an anglosaxon for a relative but glad you ARE a minority.

This is another case of the lack of resources. When I had my 1st child I was put onto an antenatal ward because Royal Oldhams maternity unit had to close due to a lack of staff and now there closing the rochdale unit down knowing the surrounding hospitals won't be able to cope with the increase in patients and as this story shows they are already struggling with the rochdale unit still open. this is a very sad story especially a this poor women had to deal with the fact of losing her unborn child and her own life was in danger due to the NHS who are well and truly collapsing under pressure its a disgrace. I would like to also express my concerns about the comments made by anglosaxon from norden I believe your comments very harsh and unfair and this family has a right to complain and express there views after such a horrific ordeal and was wondering how you would feel if this happened to a member of your family. Good Luck to the family for 2008
