IT’S going to be an extra special Christmas for one Rochdale couple.
Karen Hughes, 27, and Martin Chadwick will have their three-month-old daughter Ella, who needs a kidney transplant, home for Christmas.
Ella, who has spent a month in hospital, can spend a few hours on Christmas Day at the family home in Platting Lane, Balderstone.
Karen, a nurse at Supertots nursery in Edenfield Road, Norden, and her partner Martin, 29, have kept a daily bedside vigil with their daughter, who has been in hospital for a month.
Karen said: "It will be a like a dream to wake up next to Ella on Christmas Day."
Ella, the couple’s first child who was born on 9 September, has been diagnosed with the life-threatening congenital nephrotic syndrome.
She has been having dialysis at Rochdale Infirmary for over a month.
Miss Hughes said: "The long-term plan is to bring Ella home, but I will have to learn how to administer her dialysis treatment. She has had to be treated it in hospital because her veins are so small.
"Both kidneys are functioning but they are losing protein and they are prone to infections."
The condition affects around one in 10,000 babies and requires dialysis and a kidney transplant within the first few years of life.
It is expected that Ella, who is being treated at Rochdale Infirmary after being transferred from the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in Pendlebury, will have a kidney removed and a transplant when she is two.
