Plan 2 - Valad Developments

15/12/2007

AUSTRALIAN property group Valad believes its plans credit different areas of Rochdale with different values.

Valad’s developers have probed deep into the history of the town and want to reflect the past in the future appearance of Rochdale by preserving old buildings and bringing facilities new to the town.

Development director David Wells said: “We have done a lot of work on how Rochdale used to look and it is our mission to bring back the character of Rochdale. We are very proud to be involved in this and feel we can make a big difference.

“We will listen to what people want to do here and act on that.”

One major part of the developer’s model is the plan to create a community space in the Townhead area.

Mr  Wells said: “The area around Townhead has some trees, but apart from that it looks a little sad.

“We would be looking to create a community space and provide a better gateway for the people arriving in the east of the town.

“There would also be better links through to the rest of the scheme by John Street.”

The retail area would be north of Smith Street and may include an extension to Marks and Spencer.

Leisure was at the top of the list of priorities with an option for an open-air cinema and a new health and fitness facility between John Street and Smith Street.

Mr Wells added: “Rochdale needs more of an evening activity area. I have worked with similar projects whereby cinemas have the option to screen films outside when the weather is nice.”

Valad have worked on a number of projects including the Sheffield Digital Campus business district and a £230M development in Melbourne.

while agreeing that all plans for the redevelopment have their merits, the idea of trendy sculputures does not impress me.this is rochdale and we live here, lets celebrate our heritage.what about a fantastic mosiac in a piazza of our unique coat of arms signifying our past.this is something al the developers could incorporate within their budgets.ps you can thank me on this e mail for my idea which will be approved by every rochdalian
