Chance to budget for the future

13/12/2007

OLDER and disabled people are to be given more independence through ‘personal care budgets’.

The scheme, unveiled by central government this week, has been welcomed by Rochdale Council as it will give people more of a say in the support services that they receive.

Those who receive funded care will be given their own personal budgets so they can choose the support services they want for themselves or a family member.

It will also ensure that everyone has access to advice and information about what help is available to them.

Rochdale Council's cabinet member for health and social care, Councillor Dale Mulgrew, said: “This move by the government perfectly fits with our continuing modernisation of adult care services.

“It means that people in the borough will get much more of a say in what support they get as well as who provides them with it.

“Effectively this means a fundamental change for the individual as they become the driver, instead of the service.”

Councillor Mulgrew added that the scheme would help more people to live independently.

He said: “It will also mean that we can work more closely with the NHS to ensure that people receive more coordinated support in the community, and to improve their health and well-being.”
