Police given a head-start

HI-TECH bobbies are saying ‘bah humbug’ to criminals this Christmas with the help of a crime-busting tool.

As patrols are stepped up over the festive season, officers are to be kitted out with top-of-the-range head cameras.

Inspector James Troisi is leading the initiative – aptly code-named Operation Humbug.

He said: “The cameras will be very useful tools as they will not only help us gather evidence, but will also act as a deterrent.

“We are currently training our PCs and community support officers to use them.”

While the officers will walk the street to warn off robbers and thieves, a pod is also now stationed on The Butts as part of the operation to give shoppers a point of contact in case of an emergency.

It will also be distributing safety leaflets and crime prevention devices, including bells that can be fitted on to handbags and wallets to ward off offenders.

Inspector Troisi added: “At this time of year with more people visiting the town centre, we tend to see an increase in shoplifting and pick pocketing.

“All officers on the operation will have a town-link radio, which will be used to provide officers with an early warning of incidents, allowing them to respond quickly.

“Also, links will be made with store security and management teams and provide a visible police presence in shops to deter thieves.”

He added: “We want to make sure visitors to the town centre this Christmas are safe and Humbug is about prevention, not just action.

“We will be on hand to diffuse situations before they get out of hand and  providing a strong visible presence.”

Look on the bright side Anglo. At least when they are on strike we will see more on the streets.

Well lets face it the Pcso's and PC's need all the help they can get to let the criminals get away and then to discriminate against the innocent! My son has been mugged twice and what a joke the Rochdale so called officers have been. Totally pathetic. In the 10 years that we have lived in Rochdale they have been as much use as a chocolate fireguard...or maybe to be more politically correct...as much use as a pcso with life saving skills...non existent.
