'Who would do this to a child's grave?'

Damon Wilkinson

THIEVES have ransacked the grave of a boy who inspired a legal fight to save services at Rochdale Infirmary.

Flowers and two brass vases have been taken from the grave of Dion Fitton, whose parents David and Lisa-Louise launched a High Court battle against plans to axe the accident and emergency department.

Dion died in October 2006, aged five, from a rare condition which meant he was unable to walk and talk and suffered regular seizures.

His seven-year-old brother Jordan also suffers from the same condition and needs regular emergency treatment.

David and Lisa-Louise, of Smallbridge, discovered the theft when they visited the grave in Rochdale Cemetery last Saturday.

David said: “The person who did this is inhumane. I cannot believe someone would desecrate a child’s grave. It is disgusting.

“Ever since it happened I have been trying to work out why someone would do this. The things they stole aren’t worth anything. It is just mindless vandalism.

“It is upsetting because we were beginning to get on with our lives and this just brings it all back. Why can’t they just let him rest in peace?”

Rochdale Council’s cemeteries manager, Derek Mack said: “I would like to express our sympathy to the Fitton family at having to go through this awful experience.

“We do everything possible to try and prevent incidents of this nature, but at the same time we have to allow access to cemeteries in the evenings and at weekends.

“Gates are locked every night at dusk and ad hoc patrols take place. We’d urge anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity in or around a cemetery to contact the police.”

The Fittons hoped to force a judicial review into the decision to axe the A and E department and replace it with an ‘urgent care centre’.

They argued the move was invalid because the public of Rochdale had not been properly consulted.

But in June a High Court judge rejected their case saying it was ‘unarguable’.
