HARRY the cheery polar bear was roaming around the town centre on Saturday in the hope of getting his paws on your cash.
Fortunately, the cheeky chappie is a far less threatening figure than his wild counterparts with just one ambition - to raise as much cash as possible for the two million people left destitute by the cyclone in Bangladesh.
The stunt is the brainwave of Councillor Farooq Ahmed, the man who donned the dazzling white suit.
The curry chef, who is of Bangladeshi origin, said: “I have been Harry before and I'm sure I will attract some attention.
“I just felt there wasn‘t going on to help the victims of the cyclone and I wanted to help.
“A businessman has also agreed to donate 2,000 bags of rice - we will be suggesting that people pay £5 for a bag.”
In addition, Councillor Ahmed has also organised a charity night at his Veenas restaurant in Heywood.
It takes place on 3 December from 6.30pm and will include various fundraising activities, such as a raffle.
