Leader makes call for clear road to progress

COUNCIL leader Alan Taylor has asked highways officials to co-ordinate major roadworks better at the Sudden and John Street roundabouts (Townhead) to minimise the inconvenience to motorists.
Work on the Sudden roundabouts is due to finish in February, but by then work will be well underway on changes to the John Street roundabout which could have a major effect on cross-town through traffic.
Councillor Taylor says, as a result, he has asked the highways department – now known as the Impact Partnership – to try to speed up work at Sudden and slow it down at John Street to co-ordinate traffic flow better.
The Sudden roundabouts are notorious for being some of the busiest in Rochdale and are often affected by congestion, leading to long delays.
Councillor Taylor says many stages of the work are now nearing completion, but he would like them to be finished even faster so that they do not conflict with planned work at the John Street roundabout, which will see the entire roundabout removed and replaced by a traffic light controlled junction at the corner of John Street and Yorkshire Street.
The existing pedestrian underpass will also be replaced by pedestrian crossings which should be in place by the end of March.
The new Townhead junction is scheduled for completion by July.
