Message is clear: sling out Ding Quarry plans

OBSERVER readers are sending a clear message to the firm planning to reopen Ding Quarry.
Our ‘Sling Out Ding’ posters can be seen in windows along Rooley Moor Road and Ings Lane.
Welsh company D P Williams (Holdings) Ltd has applied to the council to confirm the conditions to which it must adhere if it restarts work at the Lane Head site.
Its plans would see up to 200 lorries a day transporting 28 million tonnes of stone from the quarry.
This has prompted a huge response from Observer readers and nearby residents.
Barbara Wood, of Rooley Moor Road, is showing her support by displaying two posters in her window.
She labelled the plans, which could see a lorry going past her front door every two minutes, a deathtrap.
She added: "Having 30-tonne lorries coming down here is dangerous.
"And when our houses start falling down will D P Williams pay for repairs?
"It is absolutely barmy.
"They couldn’t do it 12 years ago and we’ll make sure they don’t do it now."
In 1995 the same company made a similar application but walked away after a Observer-backed public campaign which included residents barricading the lorries.
Protesters from the Ding Quarry Action Group are hoping to provoke a similar backlash this time.
They are urging council planning officers to impose stringent conditions which make D P Williams’ plans unworkable.
Councillor Elwyn Watkins of the group said: "The campaign is increasing in momentum and picking up speed. It all now depends on the council officers doing a proper job on the conditions."
There is a dedicated Ding Quarry archive in the Special Reports section, which will be updated as the campaign progresses.
