Trike rider is hurt in smash

A MAN suffered serious leg injuries in an accident that closed part of Blackstone Edge for four hours on Sunday.

The 40-year-old had been riding his three-wheeled Yamaha machine when he was in collision with a car, resulting in both spinning out of control and ploughing into a wall.

The rider was rushed to Rochdale Infirmary, where he remains in a stable condition, but the car driver, a 44-year-old man, escaped injury.

Rochdale fire station boss Dave Astley was among the fire crews called out to the accident, which happened at about 4.20pm near the Moorcock Inn.

He said: "When I arrived both the car and the trike in front of it were embedded into the wall. I feared the worst for the trike rider because of the damage caused by the crash.

"He suffered a bad injury but I was very relieved to hear that his injuries were not life-threatening.

"We were called as a precaution as there was a suggestion that there was smoke coming from the trike but fortunately this was not the case."

Police were forced to shut part of the main road for over four hours as they dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

They are still piecing together what happened and are urging any witnesses to call 0161 867 8473.

Meanwhile, Mr Astley is issuing a keep-safe message to drivers in the run-up to winter.

"As officers, we are called to more and more road accidents," he said.

"Last year there were six fatalities on the roads in Rochdale, a higher number than house fire victims.

"I want to remind people to take care on the roads this autumn and winter, particularly as they become slippery during the winter months."
