Firebugs in arson attack on popular playground

FIREBUGS caused thousands of pounds worth of damage when they torched part of a popular Wardleworth playground.

The South Street facility, which was built after a lengthy public campaign, was attacked over the weekend by a gang who destroyed a roundabout and parts of the colourful floor.

Angry ward Councillor Ibrar Khan visited the site to survey the damage this week, where he found just a pole where the roundabout once stood.

“I was a founder member of the youth forum which helped fight for this playground,” he said.

“We worked hard to get it up and running. It is a very popular playground with children in the area so it is a great shame that this has happened.”

The council’s street services team has since cleaned up the area and made it safe.

But it will have to spend between £3,000 and £5,000 to replace the equipment, though the work will be carried out ‘as soon as possible.’

Councillor Wera Hobhouse, who is cabinet member for the environment, said this act of mindless vandalism showed complete disregard for local people.

“It can be really distressing for local mums and dads who want to bring their children to the park.”

The cops should go in with heavy batons, tear gas and dogs to punish this low life filth properly.
