Top honour for blaze rescue PC

25/ 9/2007

A ROCHDALE police hero who put his own life at risk to drag a pensioner from his blazing home is to receive one of the country’s top bravery awards.

PC David Martin has been awarded the Royal Humane Society’s bronze medal for his courage in saving 79-year-old Jack Crandon, who had collapsed in the kitchen after a fire at his home in Roch Valley Way, Brimrod, early in the morning of 27 February.

The fire was so intense that the 50-year-old’s uniform started to melt and nearby houses had to be evacuated.

His boss, Chief Superintendent Peter Mason, said: "I am very proud that one of my officer’s brave actions are being recognised by this award.

"David’s actions were over and above what was expected and as a result of these actions he undoubtedly saved the lives of the occupant."

Announcing the award, Dick Wilkinson, secretary of the Royal Humane Society, said: "Bronze medals are only awarded when exceptional bravery has been shown.

"There is no question that exceptional bravery was shown here.

"This was an horrific incident in which this brave officer put his own life on the line.

"It takes enormous courage to go into a blazing building, but PC Martin did not hesitate and as a result Mr Crandon was saved.

"PC Martin is a credit to the police."

Mr Wilkinson said that by the time PC Martin and a colleague arrived at Mr Crandon’s home it was well ablaze.

Mr Wilkinson went on: "The heat and intensity of the flames had broken the windows.

"Flames were licking at the walls above the window frames.

"PC Martin heard a voice above the noise of the fire and then spotted a person lying on the kitchen floor.

"With total disregard to his own safety, he immediately forced open the kitchen door and, without protective clothing, managed to drag Mr Crandon to safety.

"The two men were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns."

Mr Wilkinson said PC Martin, an officer of 28 years’ service, had been recommended for the award by senior officers of the Greater Manchester Police.
