Lauren pedals her way to cash

19/ 7/2008

MEDICAL student Lauren Jones got on her bike and cycled all the way to Blackpool for the Observer’s ‘Can You Spare A Minute’ appeal.

As a volunteer at Springhill Hospice, the 19-year-old knows just what a difference it makes to patients and their families.

While Lauren Jones is generous and kind-hearted to work for this appeal, and I admire her for doing it, I question why the government can find £5 to £15 billion for an unnecessary ID system, £50 billion to save a bank, £25 to £75 billion to renew Trident and countless £billions to fight a war that should not have been started, yet £25,000 is not available to refurbish one vital patient bay (never mind £75,000 for three) in a hospice.
