'Shocking' pattern of suicides at town flats

Laura Shannon
22/ 3/2008

SUICIDES, anti-social behaviour and an urgent need for repair work have become major concerns for residents of College Bank.

A recent death has prompted the residents’ and tenants’ association to question what action is being taken to improve the area.

Bigun, can i ask how the family of the guy who jumped are doing? I was driving past when it happened and performed CPR on him, unfortunatly unable to revive him. since then the family have been on my mind. I hope they are well, my thoughts are with them. Also i believe that those who live in the flats should be the ones to make the decisions about their homes! it has little or nothin to do with anyone else. i believe health cheacks should be taken on those who wish to move in, as suicides as happpen so often.    i have lived in these flats for 20+ years and my parents still do. The only problem with these are the yobs that live there. i know a lot of people that live in these flats and they never have a problem. And things wouldn't need doing if the residents didn't make the problems. I have seen chip trays and alsorts thrown out but thats not the flats fault. i know most of the rbh team and they are all friendly and chatty but they can't change people for the better and people need to realise that. You demolish these flats and find say 9000 people homes. You can't. I now live in a different place and have been told that the council are demolishin homes around me. Why dont they start building homes instead of destroying. How would some of you like it if ur home was demolished just because someone random person doesn't like it?? Yeh suicides happen but for reasons and its not just these flats. Some of the people who have commited suicide have had real problems and the people around them ie docs etc have neglected them. no you can't always help someone especially if they dont react to your help but at least youve tried.

The Evangelist I agree they should be pulled down, but offices in the town are not being rented due to this town not attracting quality business.

I think nice semi detached homes with gardens would suffice as people need breathing space.

Has anyone ever thought of the horror of a depressed person jumping off these flats and hitting someone else?

It can happen as far fetched as it sounds, so this is now a health and safety issue surely. As the figures show four people in two years are commiting suicide, it only takes one person at the bottom in the wrong place at the wrong time to be killed too.

If a person jumps of Healey dell viaduct it's highly unlikely they will land on another person, but these are town centre flats and lots of people are around.

Sorry to be depressive but this will happen one day until it is addressed and these tower blocks are knocked to the ground.

My condolences to the families who have suffered loss in this way, but a medical check should be carried out on people renting these flats, and no person with a history of mental illness should be ever allowed to be housed in high rise flats.

Housing officers in this Borough, you dont need a degree it's common sense.

These flats are not suitable for accommodation and should bought down.or sold off for office use. People deserve better homes.

Id look at the housing policy - you put rubbish in the chute your going to end up with a mess at the bottom - the security needs to be reviewed also to prevent access to vulnerable areas - if college bank was in manchester the flats would be classed as penthouse apartments - I believe the tenants love the high rise living, shame the new tenants are not checked for suitability.

Bigun it really doesn't matter who parks where the whole point is the people who designed those eyesore block of monstrosities should have been made to live in them.

Okay they house a large number of people and the flats themselves are quite decent inside, but they should have never been allowed to get away with buiding high rise flats.

Rochdale is to undergo regeneration. The plans look quite decent except these seven ugly sisters will remain.

Pull them down and give people decent living accommodation.

i would just like to point out to people that don't live in these flats. should keep there mouths shut. i've lived here for 10yrs now & love it it's not the flats that are at fault but the people that mess the area up. some of the residents throw rubbish out of their windows NOT ALL OF THE RESIDENTS DO THIS. but i've seen it my self. when i've reported it nothing seems to be done. also we have people parking their cars/vans here that don't live here. there is one way of stopping these young people from comeing on to the area. & that is to stop the little shop here from selling beers. also may i add that the last death was a young man. who's dad i work with he had no idea that he was going to jump. yes he was depressed & should not have been given a flat. but who know's if this would have stopped him from doing what he did.or if any of them would have not done this. its not the flats that need replaceing its some of the people that spoil it for the rest of us living here.

It would be a start if you stopped housing people with a history of mental illness and depression in the high rised flates. If i had to live in that high rise eyesore i would be tempted to jump too.

Pull them down altogether, they are a blot on the landscape.

Nobody should have to live in those grey concrete slabs.
