Retired teacher killed in NZ bike accident
Katie Fitzpatrick29/ 2/2008
A FORMER Rochdale teacher died in New Zealand after his motorbike collided with a truck.
Father-of-two John Metcalfe, who was on a two-month motorcycling tour, was killed near Maramarua in the North Island.
Mr. Metcalfe tought me as a child. He was great not only as a PE and Technical Drawing teacher but in a all male class, complimented perfectly the "birds and bees" education we got from our parents. He used to follow us up on the moors during the dreaded cross country runs on his scrambler bike. (He also used to give the slow fat kids a half mile lift so they could keep up)! He made many kids in the crazy 60s/70s make sense of life. His contribution to soceity was priceless, what a pity he had to leave us so young.
