How Paul got a loan refund

14/ 7/2008

WHICH? member Paul Regis has received a cheque for £188 and an apology from the AA after being overcharged on a personal loan.

Last year, Paul took out a loan of £15,000 with the AA to pay for house renovation costs. He expected that he'd be able to repay the loan early, so shopped around for a loan with no penalties for doing so.

Six months into the loan, Paul was able to pay it back. But the settlement figure the AA gave him was for more than he'd originally borrowed.

"I disputed the amount but was assured it was correct," Paul said. We asked the AA to look into Paul's case, and it discovered a system fault which meant Paul was overcharged.

It has repaid Paul and included £100 as a goodwill gesture. The AA tells us that it will now be contacting any other customers who may have been affected and will repay them their money, too.
