Bands line-up for our live showcase

THE Rochdale Observer has teamed up with XFM’s Clint Boon and Happy Mondays tour DJ Dave Sweetmore to pick the best local bands to play at Roch Revolution Live, our live August showcase.

Having close ties with the town after attending arts college in Rochdale, former Inspiral Carpets keyboardist Clint was thrilled to hear about the rise of the New Roch Revolution and impressed by the amount of up-and-coming local talent itching to take part.

After being inundated with demo CDs from quirky indie tunes to ska and heavy rock, the cream of Rochdale’s talent has now been chosen for the gig.

Clint said: "I think it’s great for any town to encourage and support live music on this scale, but when it’s a town I’ve got a close relationship with it’s even better.

"It’s always good to see gigs and music events going on – I think it’s brilliant!"

The New Roch Revolution Live – featuring the bands shown here – will be rocking Twist nightclub in Drake Street on Sunday 24 August.

Entry is £3 with a showcase of seven live local bands followed by a late night indie DJ set from Dave Sweetmore. All proceeds are being donated to Springhill Hospice.

  • GARAGE-rock-indie band Sound Stripe will be headlining the event. Inspired by the White Stripes and the Von Bondies, their sound is fast, furious and completely infectious. Clint said: "This band is contemporary and immediate for an audience – Sound Stripe will be a great band to headline."

  • REFUSING to pigeon-hole their sound The Reveres will be mixing up their set, keeping the audience on their toes with indie/rock tunes. Clint said: "I’d play this CD on the radio no problem. They’re very contemporary – remind me of a lot of scouse bands."
  • WOLFGANG Radio are prepared to play anywhere people will listen and will be bringing their emotive, adrenalin-driven working class, 1984 rock sound to entertain the crowd at Twist. Clint said: "I think this CD is brilliant, that’s perfect, it’s like epic rock in the vein of Radiohead."

  • MAKING their first steps into the Rochdale music scene at Twist are The Microtones formed two years ago and are now looking to spread their sound. Clint said: "The Microtones sound like a sort of ska crossover band, they’re a bit quirky and there is a great market for that sort of music."

  • A NEW addition to the line-up are Snow Byrds, hailing from Whitworth. They have gigged at festivals across Europe and gained a big following. Click here to read more about them ...

  • INDIE-pop outfit Brightsparks will be opening the show with their cheeky home-town tunes. Clint said: "The Brightsparks seem to have been inspired by the Libertines, they’re quirky and upbeat and will make a good opening band."
