The Papers:
The Rochdale Observer has been the town's principal newspaper since 1856. It is a bi-weekly, Wednesday and Saturday, with a high household penetration and (according to market research) an enviably young readership. In the past the newspaper has been awarded "Campaigning Newspaper Of The Year", the Observer is one of the country's leading community newspapers. Recent innovations have included the "Life" section, which quickly established itself as the leading local entertainment's guide, and has become the blueprint for similar sections in our other titles. Advertising is as broadly based as its readership appeal, being strong in all sections of the newspaper.
The Market
Rochdale is a traditional Lancashire town encompassing a wide range of environments. Its housing stock varies from traditional terraces to Norden and Bamford, which is one of the largest areas of up-market housing in the county. Surrounding small towns and villages, like Littleborough and Milnrow at the foot of the Pennine hills, are becoming popular with commuters. The town has a very diversified industrial base with several market-leading companies. The M62 motorway is producing much growth, particularly in distribution industries. A thriving town centre, with two modern shopping malls, is complemented by retail parks on the edge of the town.
Communication Links
Rochdale has its own link to the M62 Trans-Pennine motorway. It is within easy reach of Manchester and other Lancashire towns, while Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford and Leeds, across the border in Yorkshire, are almost as easy to get to. The town lies on the main Manchester-Leeds rail line and there are also services to Oldham. A link to Manchester's Metrolink tram system is also planned.
