RUGBY LEAGUE: Cup kings of 1922

13/ 5/2006

HORNETS won the Challenge Cup Final - then the Northern Union Cup - for the first and only time in 1922 at Headingley on 6 May.

They had reached the Challenge Cup semi-finals in 1911 and 1915, but by 1922 they had assembled one of the finest teams to grace the club's famous red, white and blue colours.

In the first round they beat Cumbrian amateur side Broughton Moor 54-2 with winger Joe Corsi grabbing five tries.

In the second round Hornets faced Leeds at home, they won 15-7..

Their third-round encounter was against Oldham. Hornets notched a 5-2 victory in front of a massive crowd of 26,664.

Widnes were well beaten 23-3 in the semi-final and Hornets faced Hull in the final at Headingley on Saturday. The Humbersiders were pre-match favourites, but Hornets led 7-6 at half-time. The locals scored again to make it 10-6 but Hull closed the gap to one point with a try. The conversion was missed and Hornets lifted the cup.

A crowd of 40,000 met the team on their return to Rochdale.

I believe Joe Corsi was my grandfather and his true name was Giovanni. He was originally from Cardiff and was also known by the names of Jack, and John Corsi.
