150 years of the Observer

24/ 2/2006

EACH month throughout 2006, we celebrated 150 years of publication with a special supplement ...

This first one, which you can read in this special Rochdale 150 section, was "150 Years of the Observer", in which we looked at the people and events which took the Observer from humble beginnings in 1856 to being one of the leading local newspapers in the country.

You'll find out some amazing facts - we did in compiling it. Some great innovations like the special evening editions to report on the progress of the Franco-Prussian War!

There were also publications on sport, entertainment, housing, motoring, shopping, public transport and more.

There's plenty of nostalgia to wallow in, but each publication will also look to the future.

It's our aim not just to celebrate the past, but to build up pride at what Rochdale and Rochdalians have achieved and look at what is on the horizon that will make both our town and this newspaper better than ever before.

We've made all 10 supplements available here for you to read again - simply follow the links to each supplement on the left-hand side to reach each one.
