Sarge puts bikers on right track

IF ANY one person was responsible for improving the safety of the town's motorcyclists it was Police Sergeant Jack Hargreaves.

A traffic officer for more than a quarter of a century, he started the RAC/ACU motorcycle training scheme in Rochdale.

The scheme was credited with saving countless riders from death or serious injuries on the road.

A native of Rochdale, Sergeant Hargreaves served in the Army in France, the Middle East and Italy before joining the borough police force in 1948.

Initially he worked in the patrol branch but before long moved to the traffic department, where he stayed for the remainder of his career.

After setting up the training scheme he served it as an instructor and committee member for 20 years.

His work was recognised in 1968 when he was awarded the RAC/ACU bronze medallion along with his assistant, Jack Wynn of Long Hill.

Sergeant Hargreaves also won the Gracie Fields Police trophy for outstanding road safety work in the community.

After retiring from the force in 1975 he worked as a vehicle examiner with the Ministry of Transport and later with Lancashire County Council's social services department.

He died in 1985 at the age of 64.

Whilst not taking anything away from Serg. Hargreaves who worked very hard over the years to improve safety, my father Jack Wynn, along with a good small band of instructors kept the scheme going for many years after Serg.Hargreaves death, only handing over the organisers post when failing health made him slow down. He was involved with the sceme from its conception around 1858 until his death at 80 years old in 1999, and was awarded the British Empire Medal for sevices to road safety in 1981. Thankyou for publishing the article, lovely to see my Dad again, and I recieved many letters after it was published from ex pupils who remembered him.

Jack Hargreaves was my Great Uncle. This is the first picture i have ever seen of him as he died before i was born. My grandad died 10 years ago, so i only really remember him from photographs, its amazing how much Jack looks just like him! I'd Love to find out more about this side of my family so if any one knows anything or has any pictures they can show me it would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks
