Reputation tumbles as modern world moves in

18/ 7/2006

AS THE post-war rebuilding of Rochdale continued a memorable part of the old town was giving way to the new.

The area known as the Mount centred around Whitehall Street, south of Hope Street. It had a tough reputation - it was said policeman never patrolled there alone.

But by November 1955 much of the area had been cleared and was to be incorporated into a new estate which had been named Falinge Hill.

The plans were in place to build 90 homes consisting of 23 three-bedroomed houses and one four-bedroomed house and blocks of two-storey flats which would provide 59 two-bedroomed and seven one-bedroomed dwellings.

In the picture on the far left can be seen one of the blocks of two-storey flats which has been partially built while in the foreground are some roof joists for the flats and the foundations for three of the houses which had been laid. The sett-paved street running across the front of the picture was being retained and used as a foundation for the new road.
