HE SET himself a huge test then passed it with flying colours - tragically only to pay the ultimate price.

MICHAEL Fitton was caned just once at school - and to this day he protests his innocence.

HE WAS a soldier who went into battle for the education of the masses and his long-running campaign ended in triumph.
