Alice Thornton

A FORMER teacher and founder member of Clayton-le-Moors Civic Society, Mrs Alice Thornton, has died aged 85.

Mrs Thornton, of Lynwood Avenue, Clayton-le-Moors, was initially a teacher at All Saints Primary School, Clayton-le-Moors, and then went on to teach at St Christopher’s High School, Accrington, from its opening until her retirement in 1980.

She was secretary of the civic society for many years and a member of All Saints Church. A keen embroiderer, she was a member of the Blackburn Diocesan Embroidery Group and had connections with Whalley Abbey.

Mrs Thornton leaves her husband Jack, daughters Margaret and Helen, granddaughter Kath and sons-in-law Bill and Tony.

She was cremated at Accrington on Wednesday after a service at All Saints conducted by the Rev Ian Robbins, a family friend.
